Lindsey Boullt's name may not be instantly recognizable in the world
of excellent fusion guitarists, but it certainly should be. On COMPOSITION,
the San Francisco musician and MI instructor effortlessly blends world influences
including Arabic and East Indian flavors with fusion and heavy rock to create
music that is both challenging and engaging.
On expertly crafted and often hypnotic pieces such as the eerie "Moving
Panvishnu," affective "Call For Peace," crushing "Bravo Davo De La Torre," and
deceptively tricky "Aurora's Aura," Lindsey keeps things exciting and interesting
by avoiding the temptation to shred over everything (although when he does, it's
breathtaking). Lindsey shares the instrumental spotlight with some of the best in
the business, including veteran heavyweights such as keyboardist Derek
Sherinian, drummer Atma Anur, bassist Stu Hamm and violinist Jerry Goodman.
Lindsey has a fondness for odd time signatures, and while they are found
throughout COMPOSITION, nowhere are they more effectively used that on
closer "Cleopatra's Third Eye," a veritable study in time changes. Not to fear,
however, you don't have to know your 7/4's from 9/8's to enjoy COMPOSITION,
although an ear for fusion helps. Drawing on influences as divergent as
Mahavishnu Orchestra, Allan Holdsworth, Led Zeppelin and Joe Satriani, Lindsey
has produced a work of considerable breadth that should place his name on the
lips
of fusion fanatics and guitar hero enthusiasts everywhere.
