He is a perfect cross between Jimmy Page and John McLachlan, executing six-string mysticism across the fret board like no other. Instructor/guitarist Lindsey Boullt blends a unique style of world, metal shred, and synth texturing to recreate the distinctive vibe of albums such as There and Back, Birds of Fire, and Physical Graffiti to create his own work known as Composition. Along with guests Jerry Goodman, Stu Hamm, and Derek Sherinian among others, Boullt’s sophisticated melodies transverse the typical ‘Shrapnel Records’ school of thought, all the while, thankfully avoiding all ‘new age’ connotations as well.
While highly expressive with depth, tracks such as “Page Revisited,” the emotive “Farewell,” and “Cleopatra’s Third Eye” are driven by the melodies with the soloing factor showing a more fluid side to it; but with tunes like the Middle Eastern tinged “Call for Peace,” “Moving Panvishnu,” and “Aurora’s Aura,” it is the chaotic approach that is king here, where Boullt’s knack for improvisation is flexed.
Whether jamming on his electric, acoustic, or even synth guitar, Boullt offers a breath of fresh air to the world of shred guitar, where his expressive playing is highly spontaneous and energetic, where there is no lack of tuneful gusto.
